Introduction

Hello we are Thanaboon,Max,Krishika,EunJi. We are from Peicai Secondary School. We are here to know the cause of low birth rate in singapore. And so we have interviewed (7) people to ask about their opinion. If we were to continue this low birth rate, the number of working adults to support the elderly is lower so it is very important to increase our birth rate.

Background Information

Singapore has a very low birth rate so if this continues we tend to have more foreigners in singapore.

The factors that leads to low birth rate

Later marriage:
People in singapore tend to marry later on in life most probably becauses of people pursing their career and if they marry later the amount of babies the can produce will be lesser since the fertility rate of women gets lower and lower every passing year.

Fewer Marriage:
Many singaporean tend to remain single as they spend more time pursuing their job and sometimes these jobs require more skill and knowledge so people stay in school for longer period of time

Prefrence for smaller families:
Many people prefer smaller family due to the fact that it is very costly to handle many children and many tend to think having a child is stresses them since they have to work longer hours just to support their family

Methodology

We went to interview 7 people in our school on Monday on their opinion on the following questions .

1.Why do you think there is a low birthrate in Singapore?

2.Why are there many family who do not want children?

3.Why do many people not get married?

4.Are you married?(if yes proceed to 5. No to 6.)

5.Do you have any children?(yes to 7. no to 8.)

6.Why do you not want to get married?

7.How many children do you plan on having?

8.Why do you not want children?

9.Why do you think the government is so concern about having a low birth rate

10.What do you think the government can do to encourage people to give birth to more children

11.Countries like Australia,Both parents share 18 months of paid maternity leave.Do you think it is a good idea for Singapore? Why?

Results & Analysis

Out of the 7 people we had interview, only 3 person are married. 2 of them have 2 children and 1 of them has 3 children.Among the 3 people that are married with children said that have children are great because childrens bring them joy, but also sometime can be stressful as taking care of them and raising them is not easy. For the rest of the 4 people that we had interview, all of them said that they are planning to get married in the future, but not all of them are planning to give birth as they said that they do not want to have children because it is expensive to give birth to children in Singapore as Singapore is a very expensive country to leave in.Overall among all of the people we had interview said that Singapore is experiencing a low birthrate because people get married late, so the fertile period is shorter and even if they get married they would focus more on their careers then giving birth. And also they said that Singapore is experiencing a low birthrate because it is expensive to give birth to children compared to the past, and if they gave birth, raising a child is hard for those people who only have an average salary. Last but not least the Young Generation want to have their Freedom first before planning to give birth.

Conclusion

In conclusion, most of the people whom we had interviewed thought that career was the cause of the problem leading to a low birthrate to Singapore. But for us we thought that career was only the first problem as there are other problem like financial problem. (We did not pursue to ask anymore personal question as some of them might feel uncomfortable.)

Reflection

Max Yeo: Though i did not do any interview, I understood the importance of having a higher birth rate and reason on why many do not want any children in Singapore. It has given me great insight on what is happening in Singapore and its government.

Krishika: Overall , I think that the government should give the working people higher salary in order for them to not worry about financial cost . I interviewed three people with Eun Ji . one of the people we interviewed didn't really know  how to speak English but we tried to communicate with her .

Eunji:I interviewed a total of 3 people. I interviewed 1 person, Krishika was writing down the answer when i was asking the questions. This Geography project was my first project in Peicai. I thought that this project would be boring, but it was not

Thanaboon: Throughout this project, I have the important of give birth and understand why most singaporean do not want to have a child.Overall i think that the government should give parents with baby at least half a year leave with their working salary.
